We believe that the arts offer a potent medium for captivating the imaginations of homeless and transitional youth. Through our art and gallery programs, we try to divert kids from negative forms of expression by showing them that painting, photography, creative writing, sculpture, etc. offer positive, esteem-building opportunities for self-expression. We also teach that the arts represent a vital form of communication that provides a safe forum for sharing ideas – particularly for a diverse population facing the stresses and dangers of life on the streets.
Our programs are taught by p:ear staff and a group of highly skilled artists – who are experienced in working with young people challenged by homelessness – in the area of creative writing, photography, painting, sculpture, filmmaking, etc.
