Position: p:ear bike works program coordinator

1 FTE: Tuesday through Saturday. Requires occasional evenings and Sundays.

Reports To:p:ear Works Coordinator

Compensation: $42.5k. Benefits include 6 weeks paid vacation, health, 2% Simple IRA match, short-term disability, 7 paid sick days.

Required Qualifications & Competencies

  • Experience building trusting, healthy relationships with homeless and marginalized youth
  • Commitment to advancing equity and creating and maintaining an inclusive environment that is welcoming for all
  • Commitment to building strong partnerships/relationships with the Rosewood community
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be a positive and strong role model, have a collaborative, team-oriented work style and strong strategic and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to non-violence and compassionate responses
  • Experience in bicycle mechanics and staff management. Community bike shop experience a big advantage
  • BBI/UBI or similar certification or equivalent work experience
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Able to work independently, problem solve and complete tasks with minimal oversight
  • Mathematical skills, including how to calculate profit margin and markup, budgeting and projections
  • Bilingual preferred
 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Teacher & Advocate

  • oProvide direct support in managing and mentoring four to six youth internships annually
  • oCreate a safe, supportive and learning-centered environment
  • oHelps facilitate, model, teach and develop professional soft skills for youth interns such as: conflict resolution, attention to detail, business awareness, communication, customer service, information technology, numeracy and interpersonal skills
  • oExemplifies compassion and understanding around the barriers of homelessness as it pertains to our interns
  • oTeach advanced bike mechanics, to interns through a 20-hour certification

 

Shop Manager & Lead Bike Mechanic

  • oServe as head mechanic and manager during all regular open shop hours, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays
  • oMonitor and maintain an inventory of parts and accessories, submit and receive parts orders
  • oMaintain an organized and efficient work environment
  • oManage budgets and youth time sheets; this includes tracking expenditures, keeping expenditures under/at budget and working with the Bike Works coordinator to generate sufficient revenue streams
  • oWork with Coordinator of p:ear Works to expand programming and integrate strategies that keep with p:ear Bike Work’s long term strategic plan and vision
  • oProficiently execute assembly, repairs and maintenance for all types of bicycles, particularly to used and older bicycles

 

p:ear Floor Support

  • oRequired on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for youth engagement
  • oDevelop healthy, mentoring relationships with youth
  • oProvide direct support, mentoring and assistance to p:ear youth
  • oAssistance in teaching Bike Mechanic School when in session
  • oCollaborate with staff to support the general needs of programs or the floor and seek interdisciplinary opportunities for learning
  • oMaintain appropriate boundaries

 

Community Programming Liaison

  • oBuild and sustain relationships with the Rosewood community
  • oRepresent p:ear and its mission positively and professionally
  • oIdentify barriers and recommend solutions to better serve the community
  • oWork on integrating and developing long term proposed strategies: community outreach, youth and adult classes and bicycle programs
  • oParticipate in Sunday Parkways, Free Bikes 4 Kids, as well as the occasional Community bike ride events (Safe Routes to School, Oregon Walkways etc.)
  • Able to sit or stand and walk throughout the scheduled work shift
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 lbs

 

p:ear Bike Works

p:ear Bike Works promotes the bicycle as a vehicle for social change to empower homeless youth

and build resilient and diverse communities. p:ear’s social enterprise bike shop works to make bicycling accessible and affordable to Portland’s east side community. Our full service bike shop provides an array of services, from minor adjustments and tune-ups, to full bike overhauls.

p:ear’s Bike Mechanic School serves as a conduit from which our shop’s intern mechanics became educated and trained in the art of bike mechanics. Under your guidance p:ear youth interns will continue to build their mechanical hard skills as well as develop the soft skills of customer service, time management, problem solving and independence to name a few.

 

The Rosewood Initiative

The Rosewood Initiative connects and empowers Rosewood neighbors to build a safe, prosperous, vibrant and inclusive community. The Rosewood Community Centeris a hub where neighbors can help the community as they improve their own lives. Neighbors come here to interact with one another, work on projects and feel safe. Rosewood builds capacity in the neighborhood by helping people learn useful skills and by connecting friends, partners and resources. The Bicycle Shop Manager position is a partnership between p:ear and The Rosewood Initiative. This person will be expected to follow all organizational policies and procedures of both organizations.
